How do you read NBA odds?

NBA odds list three bets for each game: the spread (the margin), the moneyline (who wins) and the total (combined points). Each has a number and a price, and the price is usually -110.

One game, three lines

TeamSpreadMoneylineTotal
Home team-5.5 (-110)-210O 224.5 (-110)
Away team+5.5 (-110)+175U 224.5 (-110)

The spread

-5.5 means the home team must win by 6 or more. +5.5 means the away team can lose by 5 or fewer, or win. The half point means no ties.

The moneyline

Just who wins. -210 risks $210 to win $100. +175 wins $175 on a $100 bet. See what the numbers mean.

The total

Both teams’ points added together. Over 224.5 wins if the final is 225 or more, for example 118-110 is 228. Under wins if it is 224 or less.

Player props

Bets on one player, like points over 24.5. Same idea: an over or an under, and a price. Props change fast when a player’s status changes, so check the time stamp on the price.

Before you bet

NBA lines move with injuries and rest days. Compare the same line at more than one app; a half point or a few cents of price adds up. Our odds converter turns any price into a chance.

Questions

What does -5.5 mean in the NBA?

That team is favored by 5.5 points. It has to win by 6 or more for a bet on it to win.

Why is the price usually -110?

The book charges a small fee on both sides. Risk $110 to win $100 on either.

Do overtime points count?

For spreads, moneylines and totals, yes. Check the rules of your app for props.
