What does -110 mean?

-110 means you risk $110 to win $100 (or $11 to win $10). A minus number is what you risk to win $100. A plus number, like +150, is what a $100 bet wins. Both are American odds.

Minus odds

-110: risk $110 to win $100. -200: risk $200 to win $100, a heavy favorite. The bigger the minus number, the more likely the book thinks the result is, and the less it pays you.

Plus odds

+150: a $100 bet wins $150. +400 wins $400. The bigger the plus number, the less likely the book thinks it is, and the more it pays when it lands.

What the price says about the chance

Every price is a chance in disguise. For minus odds, divide the number by itself plus 100: -110 is 110 ÷ 210 = 52.4%. For plus odds, divide 100 by the number plus 100: +150 is 100 ÷ 250 = 40%.

Why both sides are -110

A spread or a total usually shows -110 on each side. Add the two implied chances and you get 52.4% + 52.4% = 104.8%. The extra 4.8% is the book's cut, often called the juice or the vig. At -105 the cut is smaller; at -115 it is bigger. That is why the same bet at -105 is a better deal than at -115 even though the teams and the number are identical.

Why the same bet costs different amounts

One app has a side at -105, another has it at -115. A $110 bet wins about $105 at the first and about $96 at the second. Over a season that gap is often the difference between winning and losing money, which is why shopping the price matters more than most people think.

Questions

Is -110 a good price?

It is the standard price. Whether it is good depends on the chance: a bet that wins more than 52.4% of the time is a good bet at -110, one that wins less is not.

What does +100 mean?

Even money. Risk $100 to win $100. The implied chance is exactly 50%.

What is juice, or vig?

The book's cut, built into the prices. When you add both sides' implied chances and get more than 100%, the extra is the juice.
